Purpose of the Position:
Changes in the healthcare ecosystem mandate that Celgene transform its approach to harnessing data and using data-derived insights for decision-making, which is the mission of the Celgene iKU (Information, Knowledge, Utilization) function. This temporary position will assist the permanent staff of EMEA Information Knowledge Utilization (IKU) in changing the way Celgene thinks, acts, and leads with data. The intern will investigate cutting-edge technologies (see research project below), and carry out pilot projects to help iKU understand how they could be used.
The intern will develop deployable algorithms based on deep neural networks to work with real-world data such as claims and EHR data (for a survey of recent work in the field, see https://arxiv.org/pdf/1706.03446.pdf). The identification of subtypes of disease using auto-encoders for unsupervised clustering will be the first use case, potentially applicable to several disease areas of interest to Celgene. Similar work has been done using genomic and other biological data; this work will see to what extent routinely gathered claims and health record data can find useful patient subtypes as well. If successful, this could allow suggesting the most appropriate treatment for patients with different profiles, a step towards precision medicine.
