Summary/Scope

The Laboratory Manager at the Celgene San Francisco site is responsible for working with personnel from research and early development, facilities, EH&S and outside vendors to establish and maintain an efficient, safe and compliant laboratory. The Laboratory Manager is responsible for the day-to-day management of the labs and is the point person for any questions regarding the following areas:

  • Equipment, purchasing, management, and/or maintenance
  • Workflow
  • Consumables inventory (chemicals, media, consumables, enzymes, etc.)
  • Lab vendors
  • Lab space utilization/maintenance/management
  • New lab needs/programs

The Laboratory Manager will ensure processes and services are monitored for quality, cost-effectiveness, and efficiency through continuous process and quality improvement.  Recommend and implement ideas to improve operational efficiency.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide laboratory services to all biological researchers 
  • Support tissue culture labs with general cleaning, stocking and waste management
  • Perform regular prevention and cleanup of bacterial and other contaminations on lab surfaces and in incubators
  • Maintain chemical inventories. Dispose of unused/expired chemicals, interact with waste disposal vendor
  • Maintain and support general cleanliness of laboratories, manage and maintain biology glass wash facility and autoclaves 
  • Control inventory of supplies in stock centers, working with vendors for overview of supplies, insuring needed supplies are always on hand.
  • Maintain laboratory chemical inventory management database ensuring inventory and regulatory reporting accuracy
  • Maintain supplies of, and stock, laboratories with commonly used supplies (tips, centrifuge tubes, flasks, cell culture flasks, serological pipettes, etc)
  • Interface with directors to find bench space, equipment, laboratory use, work flows, and storage solutions (including biologic specimens and bulk supplies).
  • Manage equipment moves, bench and equipment assignments or changes for FTEs and contractors. Work with facilities on laboratory needs such as electrical, reconfiguration, equipment moves and data drops.
  • Provide researchers an active interface between Accounts payable, Finance, Legal and Facilities.  Help to facilitate resolutions for these types of issues, leaving the researcher the time to focus on research. Maintain and evolve relationships with vendors to provide the newest technologies to researchers.  Assist with equipment demonstrations by providing space, lab support and supplies. 
  • Maintain relationship with primary vendors for ordering lab supplies and support.  Facilitate use of vendors to assist researchers with assay development and new equipment optimization.  Organize vendor shows and demonstrations. Work with vendors to ensure the best performance on equipment through maintenance contracts.  Work with vendors to insure timely return on troubleshooting equipment and repair. 
  • As needed, train laboratory assistants or visiting lab operations staff and provide supervision. Safety walk-throughs of the laboratories to inspect the laboratories and encourage an overall safe working environment.  Suggest improvements in the laboratories, where appropriate.
  • Provide budgetary analysis for small equipment, capital equipment and supplies.   Maintain the listing of all equipment with service contracts.  Help manage capital equipment budget by: validating need and use, perform space needs assessments and recommendations, ensure installment needs including power installations, and data configurations can be met Keep database of equipment current.  Help to maintain pipette inventory and calibration.  Maintain schedule for defrosting freezers, maintaining incubators. 
  • Be available to all researchers to answer questions and find answers through research, or web searchers.  Maintain a willingness to help resolve lab issues to the satisfaction of all parties. 
  • Be on 24 hour notification for crucial equipment (all incubators, deli boxes, refrigerators, -20 freezers, -80 freezers). 
  • Respond to emergencies involving these same units no matter time of day and day of the week. Participate on EH&S Committee.

Skills/Knowledge Required:

  • Master’s degree preferred. Ideally, the Laboratory Manager will have 4+ years of experience in an industry lab setting and 2+ years of directly relevant laboratory management experience.
  • B.S. in biologic sciences with 6+ years of laboratory experience. 
  • Strong interdisciplinary personal interaction skills.
  • Expertise with Microsoft Office Suite of programs including Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and attention to detail.
