  • The Laboratory Manager will oversee laboratory operations of the site and serve as the site liaison with corporate facilities and EH&S departments.  This position will ensure processes and services are monitored for quality, cost effectiveness, and efficiency through continuous process and quality improvement.  Recommend and implement ideas to improve operational efficiency.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

Maintain supplies of, and stock, laboratories with commonly used supplies (tips, centrifuge tubes, flasks, cell culture flasks, serological pipettes, Life technologies supplies etc).

Be on 24 hour notification for all incubators, deli boxes, refrigerators, -20 freezers, -80 freezers. 

Respond to emergencies involving these same units no matter time of day and day of the week.

Responsible for Shipping and Receiving, including shipment of biological samples according to IATA/DOT guidelines

Responsible for general metrology service for laboratory equipment, coordinate arrival of new equipment, maintain equipment inventory, calibration and repair. Work with vendors to ensure the best performance on equipment through service agreements and coordinating equipment troubleshooting and repair.

Maintain and support general cleanliness of laboratories, manage and maintain glass wash facility and autoclaves.

Control inventory of supplies in stock centers. 

Work with vendors on quarterly basis for overview of supplies, insuring needed supplies are always on hand.

Monitor and ensure efficient operations of gas services.

Maintain supply and monitor usage of PPE, including labcoat service.

Support tissue culture labs with general cleaning, stocking and waste management.

Maintain chemical inventories for the site, dispose of unused/expired  chemicals, interact with waste disposal vendor.

Provide researchers an active interface between Accounts payable, Finance, Legal and Facilities. 

Help to facilitate resolutions for these types of issues, leaving the researcher the time to focus on research. 

Work with facilities on laboratory needs such as electrical, reconfiguration, equipment moves and data drops.

Maintain and evolve relationships with vendors to provide the newest technologies to researchers. 

Assist with equipment demonstrations by providing space, lab support and supplies. 

Maintain relationship with primary vendors for ordering lab supplies and support. 

Facilitate use of vendors to assist researchers with assay development and new equipment optimization. 

Organize vendor shows and demonstrations. Safety walks through of the laboratories to inspect the laboratories and encourage an overall safe working environment. 

Suggest improvements in the laboratories, where appropriate.

Provide budgetary analysis for small equipment, capital equipment and supplies. Interface with directors to find bench space, equipment, laboratory use, work flows, and storage solutions (including biologic specimens and bulk supplies).

Manage equipment moves, bench and equipment assignments or changes for contractors and FTE’s.

Skills/Knowledge Required:

  • Expertise with Microsoft Office Suite of programs including Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
  • BS in a Scientific discipline with laboratory experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong interdisciplinary personal interaction skills.
