As the global head for Chemical Sample Management for Celgene, the incumbent will lead a team of dedicated sample management and lab automation scientists in delivering chemical samples to the needs of Celgene and collaborators worldwide. The position is based in San Diego, CA, requires a highly motivated and skilled professional with extensive compound management expertise, experience in leading a distributed research environment, and ability to partner with senior Research and IT leadership to develop and execute strategic plans for world-class sample handling capabilities.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

Responsible for managing and developing scientists at multiple sites, and carrying out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Lead in the strategic planning for Compound Management growth, identifying best practices, incorporating business needs and disaster recovery planning. Lead in effective strategic thinking for chemical equity life cycle management, inclusive of new chemical equity expansion, acquisition, formatting, and sample retirement. Develop, in collaboration with the screening team, strategies and best practices necessary for accessing chemical equity needed for rapid target evaluation. Drive improvements in sample management-related informatics tools including compound registry and requesting systems. Manage/Oversee/Optimize existing sample handling operations including: Registration of incoming compounds and containers from a variety of sources, including internal synthesis at multiple sites, contract research organizations, collaborators, and commercial sources. Processing of received compounds, including solubilisation, plating and powder weighing Coordination of order fulfillment in a variety of formats using a global ordering system. Data handling, inventory tracking, and accurate record keeping for assigned tasks Domestic and international shipment of chemical samples to other sites, CROs, and collaborators, including ensuring correct documentation for shipments. Potentially, integration of small or large compound collections from acquisitions.

Experience/Skills/Knowledge Required:

  • Extensive experience in a global research environment with an emphasis on compound management, laboratory automation, research informatics solutions-including LIMS, and high throughput screening.
  • Expertise in development of short and long term strategic goals, workflow optimization and project management.
  • Recognized as a leader who motivates cross-functional and international teams.
  • The ideal candidate will possess 15-20 years of innovative scientific automation and workflow design in a chemical management setting.
  • The candidate should possess a previous background in providing strategic and scientific leadership for automation laboratory needs including:
  • Creating specifications for automated laboratory solutions
  • Developing automated protocols and custom automation solutions
  • Creating/configuring informatics tools to support laboratory operations
  • Translating laboratory methods into automated protocols
  • Integrating standard and custom hardware/software into laboratory automation systems
  • Developing novel storage solutions
  • Laboratory design, renovation, relocation, instrumentation moves and operational assistance
  • Managing multiple, large and small scale automation projects
  • Flexibly adapting to changing business needs and priorities

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD in a Scientific discipline or in a life science / engineering related field with 16 years of relevant work experience, preferred.  Candidate with a BS / MS in a life science / engineering related field, 16 or more years of relevant experience, and >10 years of chemical sample management in a Pharma/Biotech setting also considered.
  • Expertise with SQL databases and/or programming languages (for example, perl, python, java, PL-SQL, VB.Net, VBA) is highly desired.
  • Experience developing within or configuring scientific applications such as Pipeline Pilot, CORELims, or Dotmatics is a plus.
