Translational Development at Celgene

Translational Development is part of the Global Research and Early Development organization in Celgene and leads early stage clinical, pharmacological and translational research and development activities for the pipeline and supports late stage portfolio for regulatory, translational development and life cycle management. Translational Development is in the process of organizing a late translational group to support multiple disease areas of interest including Myeloma, Lymphoma, CLL and other hematological malignancies. This group will integrate scientific and business insights of multiple functions and lead the development of translational strategies at the franchise level and implement them in project teams to maximize the potential of Celgene drugs. 


This position will be responsible for leading a group of PhD and non-PhD level scientists studying the translational development efforts in Multiple Myeloma and Lymphoma. 

Specific duties:

  • Promote the application of the principles of translational medicine to facilitate and accelerate the development of drugs  
  • Lead laboratory research strategy for testing lead compounds in relevant disease models in vitro and in vivo, to understand mechanism of action and optimize therapeutic usage strategies. 
  • Put in place a Translational research/development plan for specified compounds which includes pharmacodynamic and pharmacogenetic endpoints
  • Establish cutting edge molecular and immune assays to extend capabilities of the current lab 
  • Interface with Thematic centers and set up areas of collaboration to help discovery and translational assays and collaboration in MM and NHL areas for thematic center scientists 
  • Supervise Scientists and Research Associates, under the direction of the disease leader 
  • Analyze, interpret, and report experimental results. 
  • Establish and maintain working relationship with contract laboratories, academicians and consultants.
  • Responsible for the evaluation of subordinates and recommends promotions, merit increases and/or adjustments.
  • Ensure that the Translational Development Department maintains current awareness in area of expertise, enhances the scientific credibility of Celgene through contributions to the scientific literature (publications/presentations), through extramural activities and scientifically related interactions with academic authorities.
  • Assumes responsibility for writing non-clinical pharmacology study reports, invention disclosures, as well as portions of clinical study protocols, investigator brochures, and regulatory documents such as INDs and NDAs. 


  • Ph.D. with at least 15 years of relevant work experience. Degree should be in a field of science related to cancer and/or immunology or immuno-oncology
  • 12 years of laboratory research experience, and at least 5 years of translational medicine experience in an industrial setting. 
  • Strong leadership skills and depth of scientific understanding in hematological malignancies especially in MM and/or NHL is required.
  • Relevant experience in setting up CRO based projects, academic collaborations and understanding of business practices is required.
  • Experience in various preclinical and translational tools, reagents and assays and with essential demonstrated expertise in immunology and immunological assays, development of immune and genomic models is necessary for this role.
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively convey scientific concepts and data at the corporate level, with internal working groups/project teams and external academic and industrial organizations.
  • Proven publication record demonstrating scientific accomplishments 
  • Team player, mentoring ability, excellent supervisory skills.
  • Experience in molecular platforms (NGS, single cell) is helpful but not essential.
